ERI Projects for sustainable development

ERI Senegal - Community Based Schistosomiasis Control Program

The basis for this project started in 2009 when American and Senegalese students, Cody Casey and Aissetou Mbode, established a health sensitization group.  Grace Tang’s involvement in this health project stems from her research in the three districts of Guede Chantier during the summer of 2010.  Stemming from this summer research, Grace now continues her efforts to utilize this valuable experience in implementing the following public health project.

 Purpose

To acquire and deliver schistosomiasis medication to a targeted moderate-risk population of Guede Chantier.  To work with an existing local sensitization group and provide them with community organizing strategies and training.  To work with local leaders and professional health staff to disperse health information and medicine.  To evaluate the future possibility of establishing a community project of growing and using endod or soapberry plants, which is a natural molluscide and proven effective in eliminating the vector snails.

The cost of the project is about $5000 to complete the first phase. We are currently sending out grant applications.

Water Filters and Haiti Ecovillage Initiative updates

Despite the current political climate, ERI continues to work towards helping the people of Haiti.  And we have continued to send more water filters through our SWT project during the cholera outbreak.

In partnership with Give Them A Hand(GTAH), United African Congress and other organizations, we have developed a proposal for Sustainable Ecovillage Pilot Projects in Haiti (HEV).  The United Nations International Development Organization (UNIDO) has taken great interest in our proposal as they consider it to be one of the best development models proposed for Haiti so far. A delegation of the partners are planning to visit Haiti in 2011
