UN REPRESENTATIVE FOR GLOBAL ECOVILLAGE NETWORK
Rob Wheeler has represented the Global Ecovillage Network at the United Nations for the past 15 years and has participated actively in the UN Commission and now the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development for the past 20 years. He is helping to organize GEN’s PanAfrican Ecovillage Development Programme and GEN’s Ecovillage Impact Assessment project. He serves on GEN’s Fundraising and Outreach and Networking Working Groups and is the Coordinator of the UN Working Group.
Rob is one of the primary organizers of the Commons Cluster under the UN’s NGO Major Group. He served for three years on the Executive Committee for the Millennium Forum, civil society's companion event to the UN's Millennium Assembly and Summit, as well as on the DPI/NGO Annual Conference Planning Committee.
In the 1990’s Rob co-founded and led a Sustainable Community Campaign in Santa Cruz, California. During the campaign he helped organize a Sustainable Quality Awards Program for Businesses and Community Organizations; produced and hosted a Sustainable Community Video Film Festival, featuring 60 hours of programming on Community TV; and helped to develop and gain County approval of a Local Agenda 21 Sustainability Plan. He also co-chaired the County Earth Day Committee and was the Committee Liaison with the County Office of Education, involving students and classes in a number of Earth Day activities.
Mr. Wheeler has also taught environmental education and worked as a Naturalist Teacher, Trail Leader, and Public School Teacher for more than 30 years with elementary, sixth grade, and high school students.
